Ray,  I did the same thing, took on a retirement job that is. I own and run a shop
for the repair of electric trolling motors. My only advice if you cant fit the Golf
cart batteries is to make sure its a true deep cycle and that its a wet one if your
going to bivwack. The two popular sizes are EV24 and EV27 the 27 is the bigger of
the two hence more capacity (and heavier). I've got quite a bit of feed back from
the fishermen on the Gel cells and they are all saying they don't last long enough
for their purposes. I don't have any opinion on brand name from what I understand
there are only four battery factories in the US. I did have an experience of a
customer buying a deep cycle battery at Wallmart and it was charged backward. He
went back and found three more on the shelf that were backward also..
