Brenda, I think that 31 year old heater has seen its best days.
Rebuilding is almost impossible. The heat exchange chamber may have
leaked, so it is too dangerous. You now have several choices, replace
with a new forced air furnace, go with a new Catalytic heater, take a
look at those beautiful Force 10's or Dickinson's in the West Marine
catalog, or stay near hookups and buy any number of electric heaters
that are efficient and inexpensive.
