Re: [SilverStreak] size of propane tanks

I've camped several times for two weeks or more and have only run down two
tanks once using space heater at night, gas lamp, stove and gas water heater
24/7. I do however have a spare tank that i carry around for just such a
case. And i've never ran the third tank down. And if needed, i could always get
a tank refilled when i make a food run to town. And i agree with the
comments about tongue weight. I have a 1958 Clipper with front dinette so any
weight from batteries, tanks, etc just helps me with my tongue weight percentage.
I also use a leveler hitch and sway bar and have never experienced road
sway in high winds or from other high profile vehicles. best of wishes, jim

Jason,

As noted, you do want to keep the tongue weight around 12 to 15% of the
total trailer weight. You go to light and the trailer is prone to sway more. IF
you are trying to keep the weight off the tow vehicle because of sagging
problems, you need to get weight distribution bars on the rig.

We have two 30# bottles and would not want smaller.

Jason,

I have never seen a 10 lb. propane tank on a travel trailer, the
smallest tanks I have seen for trailers is 5 gallons. If it were me I
would try to get a minimum of two 7.5 gallon tanks, two 10 gallon
tanks would be ideal. YOU WANT WEIGHT ON THE TONGUE! The trailer
will exhibit less sway if you have 12-15% of the total "loaded" weight
on the tongue. Propane is only about 7 pounds per gallon, so an
additional 5 gallons of propane will only weigh 35 lbs. + another 8
lbs for the bigger tanks.

Many years ago I had a 16' "Cardinal" trailer with two 5 gallon tanks
on it and I would go through both tanks on a 5-7 day camping trip,
with about the same equipment you list.

I have a 18 foot SS sabre and would like to purchase 2 aluminum tanks

Vintage Trailer Supply has the best prices I could find so far.

I'd like to keep my tongue weight as low as possible and therefore am
thinking
of purchasing 2 - 10lb tanks. I've never camped with a trailer before
so I
don't know if I will go through these tanks in a day or will last me
for a
while. I can get the bigger tanks no problem, but again just trying to
keep
the weight down.
