There are a couple options for getting a spot. One of them is to do as you said, stay in a Forest Service or commercial campsite just out of the park and then pull in early. Beware that many of the Forest Service sites are still full of snow until late June or sometimes even later. When we drove into the park using the NE entrance the three campsites?closest?to Cooke City were all still closed due to snow. People don't have to leave the campgound until 10:00 if they are not spending another night. But at least a few leave every morning, early because they have many miles to go. The other method is to call Xanterra, the company that?does the reservations.? Call 1-307-344-7311 or 1-866-439-7375 and be prepared for a wait on the phone of 10 to 20 minutes. But you can reserve the?a site and then?stay or move on to another site the next day. ?Good luch and enjoy. Joe ? You noted the camp grounds are full by mid-afternoon. Would spending the night, before entering the park, in a commercial RV park near by, then entering Yellowstone around 9:00AM and proceeding to a camp ground be the best way to get a spot?? Regards,? Ralph?
