RE: [SilverStreak] 1970 SS ATLAS W/TRUNK WEIGHT?

Jerry,
My 1972 Atlas is listed as 26 ft., I believe the official Silver
Streak listing for your 1970 is also 26 ft. As to the total and
tongue weights, it all depends on how you load the trailer. My total
weight is about 5,500 lbs. loaded with my normal gear for a trip. My
tongue weight is about 600 lbs. As I tow with a 1 Ton Dualy Diesel
pickup, I have never had any problems.

Your tow vehicle is probably on the "minimum" side, it should be OK if
you ALWAYS use a load equalizing hitch with sway control when you tow.
I would replace BOTH front and rear shocks with the heaviest duty
units you can find for your vehicle. I would also suggest that you
replace all of the sway-bar link connector "rubbers" with nylon or
other plastic units to firm up the ride a bit. As to the power, you
will have plenty with your Suburban.

You may want to consider replacing your "brake controller" unit with a
top of the line unit.

In my opinion the 26 ft. is the best size for two people, as you will
find it easier to maneuver, back and park than a 30-33 ft. trailer.

Good luck with your new SS.

Ralph

Subject: [SilverStreak] 1970 SS ATLAS W/TRUNK WEIGHT?

Hello all, My name is Jerry and I'm new to this group. I am
considering buying a 1970 Atlas but looking for some specific detail
from you experts.

Is the Atlas 26 or 27 feet long and what is the total weight and
tounge weight?
I would be towing with a 1999 Chev Suburban 1/2 ton with tow package.
It has the Vortec 350 with 373 gears. Is this SUV sufficent to tow
the Atlas?
