Al is correct. It probably is the back flow preventor/check valve. It's a 
couple of inches long and is attached to the outside water service line 
where you connect the water hose. It has a spring loaded valve. Sand can 
clog the valve. Take it off and clean it out. If you are going to operate 
without hookups put it back on. You will need it to retain pressure if you 
have an old pressurized system and depending on your plumbing valve layout 
to hold the water after removing the hose.
