A short time back there were numerous messages about finding a
company that would insure a vintage trailer. After being transferred
four times within Geico, my car/truck company, I finally was told
they didn't write policies where customers propose the value. ("We
take the original price paid and depreciate it." I estimated that my
1966 Caravel would be worth about 27-cents using that formula...) So
I got on the Progressive Ins. website and was very pleasantly
surprised. They have an "Agreed Value" policy whereby the owner
states his estimated value ($12-15K in my case), substantiates it
with photos and an appraisal. I called to determine from whom they
would accept an "appraisal" and was told the rules are pretty loose
-- e.g., any RV dealer, antique car appraiser, or other "qualified"
appraiser -- "Just don't submit something done by your brother." I
asked if supplementing it with actual copies of similar vintage/size
trailer advertisements would help and was told it would. I have five
eBay, CraigsList and trailer site ads for early Bambi and Caravel
models that show between $12-24K! Sorry to ramble, but thought this
might be an option for someone else. Cost? $147 a year. Check it out.
(No I don't work for Progressive).
