[VAL] Re: Door Lock Set

Two years ago in the boonies of Utah, our '66 Caravel door mysteriously
locked itself - with us outside, and the key didn't work. After 2 hours of
work a local mechanic (his definition, not mine) had the door off the hinge
and set out to fix the lock. The door knob was turning freely because the
square shaft had rounded the square opening thru which it protruded. By
welding, he was able to rebuild the square opening to "square" again, and
replaced the unit in the door. This time it wouldn't lock, but opened and
closed o.k. He mumbled something about there being a tricky "cam" inside
that had to be placed just right. He tried again without luck and we left it
closing securely but not locking, and added a keyed deadbolt below it. I
notice that the key slot is upside down. My best advice it take it to a
locksmith, and don't ask me for the name of the "mechanic" that ran the
junkyard in nowhere Utah.
