[VAL] armstrong air question

I have an original Armstrong A/C ('69) that works great--until the thermostat
temp. is reached. At that point, the unit makes a lot of LOUD clicking noises
and a few rattles as it tries to turn the compressor off. It will eventually
turn off (compressor), but repeats the problem when it once again reaches
desired temp. If I turn it off manually no such noises.  Any ideas?
