Actually there are many types of media.  The softest is probably soda, then
they have walnut shells, and a whole host of other grits of silica, sand
etc.  Each has a different grit which gets more aggressive but also has more
potential to damage parts and of course each has a residue that needs to be
cleaned up.  Most paint removal shops will recommend the best method for
your project depending on the type of material you have and how much
cleaning/paint and rust removal is required.
