Warren,
The VIN is on the plate by the door.  Those are the only numbers.  It should
match the title.  If the title is different, I would look on the tongue and
rear bumper to see if anyone added numbers of their own to title it in the
past.  A new number may have been assigned to satisfy a state requirement in
the past.
Another option is to apply for a lost title using the correct trailer VIN.
The procedure varies from state to state.  Do you have a bill of sale?  If
so what numbers are on it?
