[VAL] Trailer ID #s (not VIN)

The red numbers (what are they called?) on the rear of my  
(presumably) '64 Overlander have been removed, either deliberately or  
by the elements. What is particularly strange is that you can see  
faint outlines of two different sets of numbers! Is it possible to  
work back from the VIN to find the correct number for the trailer? If  
so, where, how, etc.?
