Ooooh, I am jumping up and down. My Axis axle is supposed to arrive 
tomorrow and let me assure you I measured very very carefully. But I 
also shortened the axle by 3/4" (3/8" on each side) to allow easier tire 
installation. I guess I didn't need to do that, since I'll have 2-3" 
more of down axle position, which will open up the gap for inserting the 
wheel. I'll be documenting all this on the airstreamforums site.
