Sorry, I should have qualified my answer. It is not zolatone as I did have a '60 with zolatone and this is definitely different. On closer evaluation it could be some type of sprayed on substance with a checkerboard texture. Very difficult to separate from the metal. I guess it could be some type of vinyl or plastic coating.
