[VAL] Tundra tow vehicle

We just finished a 17 state, 7,500 mi trip, towing with our 02 Tundra,
V8, 4 wheel dr. We were pulling our 69 Caravel, 2,800 lb. We averaged
12.4 mpg and gas cost was about $1300. Previously we had towed with an
89 Astro, V6. The Tundra has a greater wheelbase and that made a world
of difference. The difference between the V8 and V6 was only noticeable
when excellerating, level speed and going up hill were about the same,
the V8 needed 2nd gear to keep revs up.

We lost a tread outside of Flagstaff and replaced both with radials but
they are not really the best tires. It was Labor Day Sunday and we got
what was available. Any recomendations for a good radial tire?

Also, since we plan on keeping the Airstream for a long time, we are
thinking about the need for axle replacement. How do you determine if
it is necessary? What is a good replacement brand? Where are they
available?

We saw a lot of Airstreams on the road and in campgrounds. At Colstrip,
WY we saw 5 Airstreams of various sizes in a campground and drove over to
visit but all of the pullers were gone and nobody to talk to.

We had several offers to sell while on the trip.
