It sounds to me as though the experiment  should go something like this:

Three samples, probably curved to match our curvy roofs, that need to be 
fairly good size.
I think they should each be attached to a container, maybe a cheap 
styrofoam cooler, that is insulated against the outside air.
Now you need a thermometer inside each container and one outside next to 
it, but in the shade under the sample.

It seems to me that what we need to know is which finish will transmit 
the least amount of heat to the interior.  I'm not sure if the 
temperature on the surface is helpful, although if you want to do it 
right, there should be a series of readings during the course of the 
day, and might include a temp taken in sunlight.

It certainly sounds right that our roof needs to be clean, whether it is 
white or silver, and a little wax probably wouldn't hurt..  And it 
sounds as though solar panels might be a way to shade the roof along 
with free electric, ( well sort of )
