RE: [VAL] Hehr roof vent lifter & Corning/Phillips windows

Dan,

Ditto on Fred's comments. The Hehr openers only look like they are
riveted together, but they're not.

The "Type 1" Phillips/Corning window has a glass bar (what the glass
fits into at the top) that is one single piece of extruded aluminum.
Generally, Type 2 and 3 are a two piece design. It is thought that the
Type 1 was only used in the first half of 1966, but we don't know that
for sure. We do know that the Type 2 also went into production in 1966
and continued into 1967. The Type 2 design was further refined for
1968. This terminology of "Type 1, 2 & 3" is used by
Airstreamdreams.com for convenience. There were actually more than
three different designs, one as you say "morphing" into another. For
instance I bought a salvaged Corning window with a bar that did not
match the design of my "Type 1" and so I presumed it was a "Type 2",
but the Type 2 supposedly has a two piece bar. The salvaged piece
wasn't a Type 1, but it wasn't a Type 2 either because the bar was a
one piece design. Because it could not be disassembled that bar had to
be destroyed to get the Corning glass out of it, so well was the glass
imbedded into the bar.

It may be that there were slightly different designs in use at the
same time. The California factories may have had access to one and the
Ohio factory access to another, or lower price end Airstreams might
have continued to use Type 1 or 2 when higher price end Airstreams
were fitted with the more sophisticated Type 3. It is confusing to say
the least.
