Dunno about the 6 to 12 V change, I'd be doing that if possible, just to 
make parts easier to find.
My trailer had roofing tar all over all the vista views, and I used a 
lot of mineral spirits to loosen it.Not very glamourous and  kind of 
slow, but it is cheap and won't hurt the clear coat.
