Dave,

The breakaway is a pretty simple deal. The norm is to tap one lead 
(doesn't matter which one) into the charge line coming from the plug 
going to the coach battery. The other lead is attached to wire going to 
the trailer brakes. No ground involved in this one. The idea is to apply 
12V to the brakes if the trailer and tow vehicle part company.
