You can throw a split ring wheel on the ground and change the tire with just
a hammer and a prybar.   If the ring is to the outside, you can change the
tire without ever dismounting the wheel from the hub.  That probably has
more to do with their acceptance than any strength of the design.  A lot of
shops won't touch them anymore.  They've killed a lot of people.  Most of
them, especially the smaller sizes, are  old, fatigued and rusty.

At one time mechanical drum brakes were considered state-of-the-art...
