That yellow colored primer must have been alodine, an etching acid which is 
one of the reasons it's so hard to "remove".  If you had seen any green 
colored primer it would most likely have been zinc chromate sprayed over the 
"yellow" alodine treatment.  Zinc chromate isn't used today due to it being 
a *known carcinogen*.  Back when I was using zinc chromate in the spray cans 
it was a *suspected carcinogen* so by the government standards it was still 
*safe to use* -- that is until it became a "known carcinogen" and it was 
pulled from most shelves.  Aviation uses some of the *most toxic chemicals* 
due to the fact that they don't have 20 years to see if something really is 
*bad for you*.

Today aluminum is primed for painting using an epoxy 2-part primer that 
you'd need to grind off as it's that tough.
