Hi Chris, I don't see how it can be in boost mode if you are not hooked up to shore power. At any rate, I have never had that problem with my set up, I wonder if your charge wizard is being cranky because your battery is tired. The only sound I hear is the fan coming on when I'm using a fair amount of power. Daisy
