I think the problem with WD-40 is that, though it does quiet squeaks, it can
also wash out any lubricant present and worsen, rather than help, the problem
in the long run.  It's good stuff for what it's for, but not everything,
especially for long term, outdoor use.

FWIW, it was designed to be a Water Displacement stuff (like for wet spark
plugs or distributor caps, as Dean L mentioned) and what you buy in the can is
the 40th concoction they tried.  It worked, hence the name WD-40.
