My heater doesn't work so I travel with a small electric cube heater and a 
thick sleeping bag.  If it is so cold that this isn't comfortable, I don't want 
to be camping anyway so I go home. Wearing sweats to bed and a wool ski hat 
makes it less of a shock to crawl out of the sleeping beg in the AM.  I have a 
cat heater to replace the furnace soon, my old Globetrotter isn't very tight 
and I always sleep with a window open near my head so I think this is a good 
solution to replacing the old non functioning furnace and I gain some storage 
space.
