Try ebay.  There are  a lot of used VOMs out there and a good quality used
unit can be had for the same, or less than, a new 'home quality' model.
You'll be happier if you get something with alligator clips, at least for the
ground side.  I too doubt you'll need much of an amp meter, but AC and DC and
ohms (for simple continuity tests) are a must.
