I'm not sure if I get your question correctly, but I'll answer both ways I
could see it:

The positive post (and cable) is often painted or inked red.  The negative is
usually black.

-or-

If you short them together with a wrench, they'll both be red....glowing red
hot...until the battery explodes, ruins your day, your wrench and some of the
immediate surroundings.
