Minwax Polyshades "Olde Maple" over birch is what I am using right now 
in my cabinet refinishing.  It is available in either satin or gloss. It 
is a stain and polyurethane mix, and I am extremely pleased with the 
result. 

Like some others, I have used Watco finishes and been not fully satisfied.

Good luck--would like to see pictures of the finished product.
