first, make sure that there are no sheetmetal screws/pop-rivets holding them
together... then, instead of trying to pull the inner section out, try
pushing it further in... the idea is that they telescoped to a shorter
length for installation, then pulled open to the exact required length...
usually a sheet metal screw or two through them to hold them in position...
or, perhaps the installer just gave it a couple of dings with a center-punch
to make 'dimples' for the same purpose. I doubt that they used anything like
a weld, or adhesive, but i'm so often wrong about things that i just can't
say for sure...
