Yes, sounds like an ammonia
leak. Most likely the condensing coils have at least a pin-hole at
the site where you described earlier.
I replaced my original
Dometic 3-way fridge in our 69 International Ambassador with a new Norcold 8
cubic foot model and it's worked fine since 1988.
NOTICE: IF you remove
and replace your original unit you will have to make some sort of arrangement
for the in-bound outside cooling air which will go up over the cooling coils and
out the roof exhaust vent. Failure to do so WILL RESULT in a very hot
interior wall or walls and also very hot overhead cabinets. I know this
from experience.
What I did to allow a load
of outside cooling air you may not want to do but it works great for me.
Do you have an existing outside plug type access door to your fridge? Are
you willing to cut into it to install a vent? Are you willing to
disassemble and rebuild your roof exhaust vent to add a small electric fan that
consumes about 0.5amps?
If so, I'll tell you what I
did so that now I can start the fridge on propane to immediately start to pull
down the temperature inside the unit. In about 4 hours or so I can make
ice! ;) Now that's a cool thing to do in that amount of time isn't
it?
If you decide to do this job
you should take measurements to make sure the 8 cubic foot size will fit the
existing space. Mine did but I don't know what size trailer you have
either. I did not want to do any major carpentry work and I didn't have to
either but I DID have to find a way to secure the new fridge in the old
space. Doing so resulted in blocking the bottom intake screen so I had to
come up with a way to do the job and I did.
