         Stand there and supervise.  You should *not* jack on the axle 
itself, IIRC earlier posts on this list (as well as my more recent - 1995 - 
manual).  I think it bends the axle, which is a tube filled with some kind 
of elastic material - rubber?.
         I didn't know AS made a 40' trailer in 1968.  Maybe you meant a 34 
footer?
