Bob-

If the water leaks you mention are coming from where the hoses enter the top 
of the vitreous china bowl (on the back of the head) this is easily mended. 

The china bowl has (or had) a rubber grommet into which the hose goes, 
usually aided by a short nipple of 1/2" hard copper tubing. This is where the 
fresh water enter the rim, for rinsing the inside of the bowl.  If this 
sealed port has developed cracks in the rubber or the hose has backed out a 
bit, you get leaks. This joint has pressure on it when the head is flushing; 
and because of the syphon breaker, none when flushing has ceased. 
Seal it up with any bath tub caulk. But, as with any restoration or 
conservation activity, never add something that you aren't prepared remove in 
the future.
