Phil, One of the hardest hardwoods out there is bamboo. Did an internet search for "bamboo flooring" and saw some really gorgeous stuff. Price was about $5.00/sq ft (pre finished) which is comparable to most other stuff. Comes in 3/8" thick so things should need minor shaving rather than major trimming. YMMV Matt
