My 1983 Starcraft pop-up had an on-board battery, contained in a
box and vented with about a 1" diameter tube (may have been 1-1/2"). I
wouldn't trust a 3/8" tube. I think you're right - a closed (un-vented)
box seems to me like a very bad idea.
