If the valve you are talking about looks like the bottom right picture
on this page:

then it is a vacuum break type that will close automatically if
operating correctly. They are 40+ years old, and need to be
disassembled and exercised if they haven't been used in awhile. They
work great when connected to hook-ups, but use too much water for
boondocking - the spray rinse nozzle works the best then.
