Carl, It sounds as if you are dealing with an original toilet. They do not work the same as the modern ones. My memory is hazy, but I believe that there is a turn knob by the toilet to supply it with a great deal of water to flush, or a spray handle. I remember just using the spray handle to supply water to the bowl. Scott
