[VAC] Re: Synthetic transmission oil

Synthetic oils should have lower friction than normal oils and so run a
little cooler. The makers of synthetic oils and the vehicle makers seem
to like them better than local mechanics. My '98 F-150 came from the
factory with synthetic oil, but the shop that changed gears for me
doesn't believe in synthetic oil, but went back to a petroleum oil
without the Ford additives.

You can't have too much transmission oil cooler. If what you have is
part of the radiator, adding another separate from or replacing the
radiator cooler can be a benefit. Your transmission can benefit from
adding an oil temperature gauge so that you can back off the throttle
when the oil temperature begins to rise unreasonably on those long
grades up a mountain. You probably want to arrange for it to see oil
cooler inlet temperature. Or transmission sump temperature, probably not
oil cooler outlet temperature.

E.g. the transmission can safely work harder if you can keep it cool
with more oil cooler.
