Terry,
     Yes it is advisable to remove the battery.
     Make sure that it is fully charged and then put it somewhere where it
will be protected from the cold. Don't leave it on a concrete floor or it
will discharge - put it on some wood or something. Clean the battery posts
and smear some petroleum jelly on them to stop any corrosion.
I would give the battery a refresh charge, at low current, every six weeks
or so.
