Carl,
What model/make of fridge do you have?  A Kreft has the controls on top in the back (accessed inside the cabinet), and on the lower front panel.

Are you sure that is a gas line and not a copper water line going to the HW heater?  The '50's standard was 120v electric heat (you heated water on the stove while boondocking).  There was no outside vent, and the unit was turned on with the switch above the sink.  Gas heaters were an option, but became standard starting about 1960.
