Three generally accepted reasons:
1) On models right aft of the break between the flat side and rounded 
end, if the door swung forward it would have no place to latch and would 
protrude out quite a ways at the top and bottom from the side of the 
trailer.
2) On models with windows forward of the door, it would block those 
windows (duh!)
3) For buyers that took the screened awning option, if forward swinging 
it would kit the screened wall.  For later models with Zip-Dees, it 
would hit the arm.

And I'm sure there were others.  Evidently you could get it optionally 
to swing aft.  Just look at the archives - you'll come across a few here 
and there.
