[VAC] Roof air conditioner question

As some of you may know, I'm doing a restoration/renovation of a 1948
Trailwind. In order to maintain the original appearance, yet incorporate all
the modern conveniences of a 'working' travel trailer, I'm installing a
Coleman roof air-conditioner on the floor, curbside, under the forward
cafe-seating/bed. The compartment will be sound-proofed, and vented (outside
air) into the belly pan.

Here's the question: is there any problem with mounting the a/c unit on its
side, or upside-down? Currently (no pun intended), i've got it assembled on
a workbench, with an AC plug wired to the control box, and so far, i've been
able to run it in any position. It seems to operate fine, as long as the
outside air heat-exchangers remain unblocked... but are there any long-term
consequences to operating it in other than the 'normal' position?

Also, the intake heat exchanger 'fins' have been smushed in several places -
is there a simple, effective way to 'comb' them out?

Thanks!
