     No, they are not needed, just more convenient, and a lot safer in hilly
terrain.  Don't forget that with a gasoline engine, you cut off the air when
you take your foot off the accelerator and have the engine slowing you down.
The diesel engine air supply continues, and the engine freewheels, so that
to get the same engine retardance that you would with a gas engine, you need
an exhaust brake.
     With your diesel and no exhaust brake, you do not have the same slowing
effect as someone with a comparable truck AND a gas engine.  You probably do
not need all this braking however.
