There seems like there would also be a lot of weight added by going with the
schedule 40 pipe, if you could find the schedule 20 pipe, that would be much
lighter, but a bit more fragile.  ABS seems to be a little lighter compared to PVC
of the same thickness wall.

As to the connections, why not just make it one long snaking 4" tube, as in back
and forth and also with a slight grade to it for draining during moth-balling
procedures, any water left in the pipes (thin puddles at the bottom) afterword
would not be enough to damage anything if frozen.  If you don't like the snaking
route, you could tee in each length at one end, and leave that end low for
draining.

Also, I wonder how well the PVC would work as a (low) pressure water system, just
squeeze some air in there and place a pickup down low, and wah-la, instant water
pressure. Don't forget the pressure relief valve!   :-)
