You need a generator with a peak load rating current 4 or 5 times the
A/C rating to start the A/C. Otherwise the A/C won't quite start and the
generator won't quite keep generating. It could smoke them both trying.
figure on more than a half gallon of gas per hour.

There are a number of automatic transfer switches available from
numerous place including generator makers and sellers. Try
