Sounds like a good compromise to use the relay type converter and build
it into the trailer to use the trailer battery and charging line. Just
make sure that charging line is plenty big. Until it gets unwieldy, its
can't be too fat. (ground too).

Now while you are working on lights, work some silicone dielectric
grease into each wire nut, and each lamp socket, and you should cut your
maintenance way down. My '86 Ford ran 14 years with factory silicone
grease without any bad lamp connections. I can't say that of previous
vehicles.

Also apply the silicone dielectric grease to the 7 way connector to keep
it clean. It can get cruddy enough to not even run the relays if its not
protected. I just found a cap to fit the plug in one of the camping
catalogs. I've not yet tried it to see if it fits better than the ball
cover I've used over the winter.
