I had assumed that the suburban thermostat would have operated both a/c and heat, or that the A/C simply operated off the unit controls itself.  That front thermostat was a mystery.  The reason it makes a difference to me is that I'm going to have the A/C removed by the factory next month, which means they will rivet an aluminum plate on top, insulate the middle, and replace the inner skin.  The service technician said it was a fairly easy job, the only problem being it would probably be next to impossible to match the original '75 decor.  I guess I can live with that.  The best I can tell from the original purchase receipt, which was in the mass of papers that was handed me when we purchased the unit, is that this '75 Tradewind came with the A/C option.  Somewhere in the past, the original unit was replaced with a Coleman unit, which doesn't fit, and basically had to be "chopped" in place, even to the point of cutting into the aluminum ! ! extrusion room divider.  They really made a mess getting it in, so I'm hoping removal will be a huge improvement.  If I ever want an A/C in the future, I'll make sure it's a factory installed unit from an authorized Airstream dealer.  And thanks for the tips on replacing the thermostat, I'll try to pick one up today at Home Depot.
