[VAC] Re: Water & electric

Jim,
This has been discussed in the past, right here. The aluminum wiring
can be made "almost right", but it's not real easy. It's very difficult
to replace all the wiring.

Here's what I did:

Removed all of the fixtures (switches, overhead lights, etc.) and coated
the wires with NoAlox or equivilant. I found no signs of overheating in
my '68 G.T.

Never ran an electric heater of any kind. This includes coffee pots,
electric fry pans, microwave oven, or any other heavy load.

Replaced all interior light fixtures with flourescents. Although my
motive was to extend battery life while dry camping, a secondary result
was lower current draw on the 12VDC runs.

Although I sold the trailer before I got to it, my plans were to run a
circuit with one or 2 outlets, using copper wire. In that particular
unit, the wiring for those outlets could have been easily routed
behind/under the counters and cabinets. Only that/those outlets would be
used for any high-current devices.

Something that everyone needs to remember about this aluminum wiring:
You're very unlikely to have ANY trouble if you don't subject it to
heavy loads. If you run a dedicated circuit for those loads (see above),
you can pretty well forget the rest of the wiring if you do the NoAlox
thing.
