[VAC] Re: insulation - heaters - cold climates

Jill,

Airstreams, as built and factory-equipped, are capable of keeping their
occupants comfortable in extreme weather. I have stayed in one for extended
periods with overnight temperatures down to below the 20 degree range. A/Ss
are well designed and well insulated and their holding tanks are supplied
with heated air ducted from their propane furnace to prevent freezing.

Some of the older ones have double pane windows. Some of the newer and
larger ones have dual gas furnaces.

Later model roof-mounted air conditioners have a provision for installation
of a heat strip which uses 110 volt power, when connected to shore power, to
add electric heat and evenly distribute the heat via the air conditioner
blower running continuously. Some A/Ss have one or more catalytic heaters
installed which require only propane for supplemental heating. Also, many
A/S owners use various small portable electric heaters to provide additional
heat when connected to shore power.
