If you have the room to work with a circular saw, set it to cut at 45
deg. (angled toward the center of cut).  Then cut the new piece with the
angle toward the center of the bottom side.  When you drop it in, it's
nearly self-supporting, and if you use battens below, helps spread the
load a bit.
