The air conditioner performance would be better with more separation
between air inlet and outlet. Such as air inlet below, outlet through
the side or up the refrigerator vent. Which might require an auxiliary
fan. When hot exhaust air gets back to the inlet performance suffers
badly.

It might be more effective to use some simple louvers (with quarter inch
hardware cloth for a critter filter) to direct inlet and outlet streams
in opposite directions. Though louvers can be very restrictive on air
flow if not carefully selected. Ordinary gable vents don't flow easily.
