Ed,
 Dirt in the screens won't cause trouble, but a leaking faucet certainly
WILL. The pump has a very tiny chamber to hold the pressure, and using
only a bit of water will cause the pressure to fall and the pump to turn
on momentarily.

I replaced all the washers in my A/S faucets and had to ream the seats
of the kitchen faucets because they still leaked. Any good hardware
store will have a faucet reamer gadget, and it's very easy to use.
